INDIVIDUAL TRAINING GUIDE FOR EQUIPPING LEADERS

A Transferable, One-Year Plan

BASICS - As you receive and share this training for ministry and for daily Christian living, be aware that these subjects are simple "basics". The purpose of this training is to get you started. The intent is not in-depth studies, but to acquaint you with basic areas of ministry you will frequently use. Fruitful ministry will involve life-long learning. In the years ahead, you will increase in your depth of knowledge and breadth of experience in each of these "basics".

TRANSFERABLE - This approach is intentionally simple. These uncomplicated encounters with the basics will make "transfer" to other potential leaders a joyful ministry of multiplication for the rest of your life (and hopefully theirs also). And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. (2 Tim. 2:2)

APPLICATION - The New Testament illustrates that ideal training is offered OTJ (on-the-job) and JIT (just in time). Application via active ministry assignments will greatly enhance leadership development. Be mindful that it is permissible to alter the order of the subjects presented in this Guide to meet felt needs as they arise. This may often be advisable.

Discuss the privilege and joy of shepherding a group. List practical ways of meeting their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.

The most effective plan for the maturing of new believers is a personal relationship with a disciple who is willing to invest his life in sharing Biblical insights and a personal example of the abundant life. Consider a new Christian with whom you could share some of the concepts found in the first three categories of this Guide.

33. Training Leaders/

Multiplication

First Century church growth and expansion is still possible when we use First Century methods. God's plan was never simple addition, but always multiplication - of believers, leaders, and congregations. Point out the importance of a discerning spirit that is aware of potential leaders being called-out of God and a willingness to commit personally to equipping them (using this transferable approach) and sending them into new ministries. This type of 2 Tim. 2:2 multiplication makes it feasible to fulfill Christ's Great Commission using only His Word, His Spirit and YOU! No other resources are required.

COUNSELING

(Weeks 34-36)

Every leader will be called upon almost weekly to give advice or counsel and help new believers and seekers answer questions. Consider providing each new leader with a resource that gives Biblical helps for answering the most commonly asked spiritual, moral, and ethical questions. (A list of issues and Scriptures that relate to each often exists in the helps section of most Study or Reference Bibles). Give instruction in counseling basics regarding listening skills, confidentiality, referral, moral/gender cautions, etc.

SPECIALIZED TRAINING

(Weeks 37-44)

There will be training necessary and unique to the specific ministry involved and/or the targeted people group and their contextual setting. The mentor alone is capable to discern what is most needed including ample times for hands-on, ministry encounters together. Allow up to eight weeks to meet for these specialized needs and skills appropriate to the new leader's ministry setting and call.

FLEX TIME

(Weeks 45-52)

This cushion of unscheduled time allows for unexpected changes in work schedules, holidays, weather-related cancellations, family needs, vacations, etc. This flex time also makes it feasible to spend additional time on a given subject for which one week was not sufficient.

This entire approach is a TEMPLATE for TRAINING. It is not meant to be complete or "the answer" in equipping. It is simply a launching point, a model, a template that each leader can further customize as desired to facilitate use with unique individuals in unique settings. For this reason, it is not copyrighted. Mentor Helps

_ The resources in the GUIDE are intended for use with every potential leader you train. There are two reasons for this premise:

(1) No matter how much knowledge, experience, or maturity the apprentice appears to have, you cannot assume that he knows all of this content, or that he knows it contextually from your ministry perspective.

(2) Even if he were to know all these concepts, you cannot assume that he has experience in how to transfer it to another.

_ The sessions are planned for a weekly meeting of one hour which should include prayer, life sharing, an update regarding ministry projects and a time for viewing the new learning topic. Strive to keep these meetings informal and relational, but concise and focused.

_ Reread the GUIDE instructions entitled, "Application" and be sensitive about altering the order of the subjects when necessary.

_ Depending upon the leader you are training, you may wish to have the Scriptures read and studied in advance or you may prefer simply reading them together during the meeting times. This approach to training is simple for you and requires practically no preparation on your part. Do not complicate the system by bringing too many extra resources and changing the meeting into a formal lecture presentation.

_ The "Notes" column on the GUIDE provides you with a place to record and share illustrations from your experience that may help your learner and which could, in turn, later be transferred to others.

_ This resource is called an "Individual" Training GUIDE and that is the ideal intent in mentoring. However, there may be settings where you may wish to use the GUIDE to train a team of two or more for shared ministry responsibilities.

_ The most vital resource that you possess is your life! Paul instructs us to IMPART not only the Gospel of God (content), but also our own lives (1 Thess. 2:8-9). The weekly meetings are vital, but you must also bring the learners into all aspects of your life and ministry and become a part of theirs. The subjects addressed in this GUIDE will be best learned in the context of the laboratory of your life and ministry. Take the learner "with you" (Mark 3:14) - Jesus did.
